The Switzerland-based shoe major Bata is looking to give a digital push to the brand in India for growth and expects the country to be the highest revenue generator by the end of the next financial year, said a top company official.

Currently, Italy is the top market for the Bata Shoe Organisation, however rapid physical expansion coupled with digital push is expected to make India the most important market for the firm.

Bata India had reported net profit to Rs 38 crore (approx $ 6 million) for the third quarter ended December 31 with revenue of Rs 640 crore (approx $ 98.4 million).

"India is the second most important market. But, it is growing so fast that probably it will be the most important market by end of this year in terms of turnover," BSO Director Christine Bata Schmidt told news agency PTI.

Schmidt said the company will focus on the digital platform in the next few years, but will not go for the discounting model to push sales.  Both brick and mortar stores and digital platform will complement each other, she said.

"The interesting thing about digital is that there are some pure digital players in the market. They have been growing incredibly fast. There are some really interesting studies being done. It shows, digital sales go up if companies have a store, and it goes down if they close the store. It is because the brand disappears from the consumers' vision," Schmidt added.

BSO is currently present in 70 countries and operates around 1,200 stores across the country. The brand is also available on all leading e-commerce websites in India.
