Bangladesh imported 46 per cent of its requirement of cotton from India last year, according to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, which recently had a meeting with industry leaders. An eight-member delegation led by Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA) president Mehdi Ali met Indian high commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla and briefed him with the news.

The association works closely with Indian Cotton Association and Cotton Association of India as the country depends on import for raw cotton, Bangladesh media reported quoting the high commission officials.

Local cotton growers meet a mere 2 per cent of the demand leading to over $3 billion worth of imports. Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of readymade clothes after China.
