Bangalore Fashion Week: athleisure, gowns, and garments sewn by inmates
Sep 3, 2019
This season, Bangalore Fashion Week brought a diverse mix of designers to the city and the event’s 21st edition featured new product lines and brand launches, space-age festive wear, and a new take on ethnic fusion wear.
Parole presented its first ever collection on the runway on day three of the fashion week. Designed by Abhishek Dutta, Parole’s garments are sewn by both male and female inmates in several of Kolkata’s prisons with the aim of giving inmates motivation and a means of employment. The brand’s maiden collection featured a mix of ethnic, fusion, and western wear with a colour palette of white and blue shades. Casual shorts, shirt dresses, and kurtas complimented formal tailored jackets for both men and women and elegant sarees and sherwanis.
Day three also saw Swapnil Shinde present an innovative fusion wear collection that incorporated futuristic shapes and elements but retained the elegance of heritage design. Classic embellished lehengas mixed with sci-fi-esque, boned sleeves and jumpsuits and thigh-high boots also made an appearance.
On Sunday, Bengaluru’s renowned western wear designer Michelle Salins presented a collection of her signature Halston-esque gowns but surprised her audience with a new launch. Salins chose the occasion to launch her new line of athleisure and yoga wear, Mimi, on the runway and presented a collection of leggings, sports bras, vests, and slim-fit hoodies in floral prints, stripes, and plain jersey before she brought out her ballgowns.
Pushpa Thianhoih teamed up with Ozone Social to present an ethnic fusion wear collection with a rich colour palette of dark reds, greens, blacks, and metallics. Tailored jackets with dramatic puff sleeves were teamed with chiffon sarees and gowns featuring traditional woven textile inserts created a strong statement. Originally from Manipur, Thianhoih reimagined the Northeast’s cultural heritage as the peak of high fashion.
Bangalore Fashion Week ran from August 29 to September 1 at The Oterra Bangalore Hotel. The event was sponsored by Ozone Group, Wear.Style, and Blenders Pride and also featured collections by designers including Sitannya, Ideebs London, SimplyKitsch by Ashish, Libas Fashion, and Ramesh Dembla among others.
