The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently joined the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, an UN Climate Change initiative.

The charter includes a target of 30 per cent greenhouse gases (GHG) emission reduction by 2030 and a commitment to analyse and set a de-carbonisation pathway for the fashion industry.

The pathway would be set based on methodologies from the science-based targets initiative, according to an UN press release.

By joining this initiative, BGMEA pledges to support implementation of the principles enshrined in the fashion industry charter for climate action, in line with the goals established by the Paris Agreement of 2015.

“By joining the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, BGMEA commits to working collaboratively with brands, suppliers and other organisations towards GHG emission reductions pathway that puts fashion industry towards a low carbon future," BGMEA president Rubana Huq said.

The Charter, which is open for other companies and organisations to join, recognises the crucial role that fashion plays on both sides of the climate equation; as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and as a sector with multiple opportunities to reduce emissions while contributing to sustainable development.
