The working group for the creation of a gems and jewellery domestic council is currently under the chairmanship of the Joint Secretary of the Commerce Department, Manoj Kumar Dwivedi.

The 13 stakeholder entities include the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the Association of Gold Refineries & Mints (AGRM), the Imitation Jewellers Manufacturer Association (IMJA), and the India Bullion & Jewellers Association (IBJA). However, the GJC has been omitted from the group, which has caused surprise in the industry.

“It was IBJA’s vision to include all segments of the gold ecosystem in the domestic gold council,” said the IBJA’s President, Mohit Kamboj, about the situation.

“We are thankful to the commerce minister to accept our proposal for the democratic formation of the gold council.”

The GJC advertises itself as representing “interests of over three lakh gem and jewellery business” in India, according to its website.

The working group is currently working on a product and region-wise database of all businesses and organisations in the domestic gem and jewellery sector.

The group will also decide the eligibility criteria that an association must meet in order for it to be part of an electoral college of the domestic council.
