International clothing brand Gap Inc and textile manufacturer Arvind Limited have launched a new water treatment plant in Ahmedabad to remove the need for fresh water in denim production in the area, the businesses announced on November 5.

As part of both Arvind and Gap’s move towards a more sustainable production process, the businesses’ new water treatment facility will save eight million litres of fresh water each day in its ongoing denim production, ET Retail reported. The plant will save a total of 2.5 billion litres of fresh water each year by using only treated waste-water which will benefit the local community who struggle with water scarcity.

The new water treatment plant uses Membrane Bio Reactor technology to treat waste-water generated by the domestic localities surrounding the Ahmedabad facility. The treatment process does not use chemicals and draws waste-water from the municipal line through a pipeline to its treatment facility.

Gap sources a large quantity of its denim from Arvind’s Ahmedabad manufacturing plant. The brand will put the total water saved at the plant to its total water saved in global production to help it reach its goal of saving 10 billion litres of fresh water by 2020. Arvind plans to continue to reduce water-waste in its production process and aims to completely eliminate fresh water from its textile manufacturing process by the end of next year.

Arvind’s business Arvind Envisol, which works on water treatment, has plans to expand its operations on a global level. The business participated in the waste-water exhibition IFAT 2019 from October 16 to 18 in Mumbai, the business posted on Facebook. The business is currently participating at the Aquatech Amsterdam trade show which runs from November 5 to 8 in the Netherlands.
