Global e-commerce major Amazon has appointed Fashionara co-founder Arun Sirdeshmukh as the head of its India arm’s fashion portfolio, filling the crucial position that had been vacant since September last year when Vikas Purohit quit the e-commerce company.

Sirdeshmukh joined Amazon India on Tuesday, weeks after his online retailing venture folded up after struggling amid dwindling business and cash crunch, The Economic Times has reported.

Prior to striking out on his own as an entrepreneur with Fashionara, Sirdeshmukh was the CEO of Reliance Trends, the fashion and lifestyle business of Reliance Retail.

"As we continue to grow and gain momentum, we are very excited to have Arun Sirdeshmukh join us to lead Amazon Fashion in India," said Susan Saideman, vice president for global vendor management at Amazon.com, the Seattle-headquartered parent firm.

Fashion has been one of the fastest growing categories in India for Amazon, the company said. In the first quarter of 2016, unit sales of fashion products soared 200 per cent over that in the previous year while its fashion and lifestyle selection grew three times over the past six months to 15,000 local and global brands offering more than two million products, it said.

Saideman led the fashion category in the interim period after Purohit left the company. Purohit has meanwhile quit as senior vice-president at e-commerce marketplace Paytm to join the growing list of senior executives exiting Indian unicorns to launch their own startups.
