Another major fire at Camden Lock

Another major fire has hit Camden Lock market, the London shopping destination that is a major tourist attraction and also a magnet for fashion industry professionals and students seeking vintage inspiration.

Camden is a magnett for tourists and vintage fashion hunter

The fire has been brought under control after 70 firefighters battled the massive blaze that some reports said began in a guitar shop just before midnight on Sunday. However, while the blaze was largely out by 03:00, the fire service said it would continue to damp it down during Monday morning.

The fire crews appear to have prevented the fire from spreading too far but large parts of one 40 metre building have been damaged.

Camden High Street, which is just a few minutes from the giant Asos London headquarters building, has also been cordoned off with witness reports saying the flames were reaching beyond the market area, although no other buildings appear to have caught fire. Asos has itself suffered from more than one fire at its warehouse properties in recent years.

Camden market is abet stop on the London tourist trail and is a youth magnet at weekends. It claims to attract around 40m visitors annually and it is seen as one of the few London shopping locations to retain a unique visitor proposition and to be resisting the encroachment of large global chains.

But that’s not to say that larger businesses aren’t opening there. Late last year Dr Martens, which is a popular brand among Camden visitors, announced plans for a large concept store, including a customisation area and a music events space in association with amplifier specialist Marshall.

That store will open in the newly restored Tack Building that had been damaged by a huge fire in 2008 that saw the market closed down for several months. The fire damaged six permanent stores and 90 market stalls and
there was another, smaller, fire in 2014.
