Angus Chiang does flamboyant sport for debut Paris show
For his debut runway show, as part of the official Paris men's fashion week calendar, Taiwan-born designer Angus Chiang chose the setting of Les Halles -- and its library corridors -- as his collection backdrop, pampering guests with bubble tea drinks as indoor temperatures soared to 35 degrees in the French capital's summer.
Graduating in 2013 from Shih Chien University in Taiwan, Chiang made a splash in the industry that same year with his collection 'Sailing to the Moon'. The Asian newcomer was selected to represent Taiwan at the London Graduate Fashion School, where his vibrant style -- super pop and futuristic -- saw him win the competition and took him to Vancouver fashion week last year.
Offering a more 'wearable' this season, Chiang's spring/summer 2018 collection in Paris was largely inspired by cycling -- something "practiced a lot in Taiwan" -- as the designer sent out jumpsuits in every colour, sporting patches and sponsorship cycling stickers; made sexy in transparent pink and yellow and the revival of the iconic 90s bum-bag (or fanny pack) slapped across most looks.
Offering a colour palette of mostly black, white, red and blue, the mixed collection played out several traditional cultural references too. For example, the covering of models' head with 'betel nut' bags, a type of chewing gum sold in the streets of Taiwan, worn with earrings with pendants hanging from each.
Angus Chiang's quirky style is already a hit in Japan and Taiwan, where the brand has seven sales points in total, and recently earned him a top place in the LVMH Prize. Chiang was one of 21 finalists for the designer competition.
