Designer Anamika Khanna opened the first ever joint edition of FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week with a ‘phygital’ men’s and womenswear presentation that reimagined traditional Indian textiles in a dynamic, modern way.

Anamika Khanna’s autumn/ winter 2021 collection launched a landmark fashion week as two of India’s largest fashion institutions joined forces to create an online-offline event for the first time. Khanna kicked off the fashion week with a strong start by presenting a collection that showcased the designer’s great respect for India’s textile traditions but pulled no punches in updating them for the modern consumer.

The collection was created with the storyline of a 24 year-old woman who, “finds a treasure trove of textiles in a trunk in an attic and dreams up a collection that is modern, yet recognises the timelessness of the Indian heritage,” according to Khanna, Lakme Fashion Week shared on Facebook.

A monochrome colour palette was punctuated by pops of yellow, coral, and green. Traditional wear classics including kurtas and sherwanis were reimagined with asymmetric cuts and sheer, diaphanous tops with neon bralets underneath were presented alongside more structured garments featuring highly textured appliqués.

The presentation also featured hair styling by haircare brand Tresemme, a long-time collaborator with the fashion week. Tresemme created a mix of sleek, long hairstyles and 90s-inspired up-dos to reflect the heritage-meets-modern aesthetic of the collection.

Prior to the showcase, Khanna teamed up with event sponsor Nexa to film an interview about her collection. The fashion week’s phygital format has enabled a wide range of ways to showcase the designers and their work beyond what was possible with the traditional offline format. Due to this expanded fashion week offering, it is likely that digital elements will remain long after any residual Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
