Direct selling business Amway plans to increase its exports of Ayurvedic personal care products from India to countries in South East Asia and develop new products in the category.
The business has invested Rs 600 crore ($90.2 million) into developing its manufacturing facility in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The unit will act as a base from which Amway will export its Ayurvedic goods to South Asia and then other global markets, ET Bureau reported.
“It has started exporting now to South East Asian nations,” Amway’s CEO Milind Pant told the Press Trust of India. “We have started even exporting Glister herbal toothpaste to Indonesia and we are looking at Thailand and other countries for that.”
The business sees the Ayurvedic category, which encompasses personal care, health, and food products, as having high growth potential in the global market. The business aims to add new products to its current selection with a focus on preventative health, wellness, and nutrition and is currently undertaking research and development towards this goal.
“We have a lot to do and I think all the work that is happening both on manufacturing and our backward integration, and all the investments we've made thus far, the innovation that is taking place in herbals and Ayurveda, has the potential especially for Southeast Asia first and then of course, other parts of the world,” said Pant.
