From May 19 to 26, womenswear brand Amiraah and crafts retailer Sanatkada are running online fashion and lifestyle shopping fair ‘Karigari’ to support artisans across India.

Karigari aims to empower craftspeople facing a halt to business during lockdown - Amiraah- Facebook

“Through Karigari, we wanted to make a real sustainable long-term impact as these artisans are the backbone of the industry and we want to bring them back on their feet,” announced Amiraah on Facebook. “By promoting these artisans, we aim to give them a platform that uplifts them.”

All proceeds from the online shopping fair will go directly to the artisans who made the products. Many craftspeople and garment manufacturers across India are facing financial difficulties as work comes to a halt along with much of the fashion industry.

“Recognising the impact of cancelled orders and inventory backlogs by fashion houses and small businesses that employ handwork artisans, all profits from the sales of the virtual shopping experience at Amiraah will go to these artisans via Sanat Kada, an initiative based out of Lucknow that has always worked towards bringing crafts straight from the Karigar,” said Amiraah.

Products featured in the online shopping fair include marble work objects by Agra-based group Al Maun, as well as a range of textiles and accessories. The fair is taking place on Sanatkada’s dedicated e-commerce store. The initiative is also designed to raise awareness about craftsmanship in India, which is designed to lead to more long-term support for the artisans.
