American Eagle Outfitters to open 25 stores in India in coming three years

American Eagle Outfitters will open 25 stores across India in the coming three years with six to nine store openings planned by the end of 2018. Upcoming locations include Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, and Delhi.

American Eagle Outfitters, which entered the Indian market this summer with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, is currently expanding its retail footprint in the country. The US-based casual wear brand foresees India becoming one of its top three international markets over the next five years.

“We are looking forward to opening more flagship stores in key cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and these stores will be bigger than the average store,” American Eagle Outfitters’ vice-president of international and business development, Guillermo La Rosa told Images Retail. “In addition to this, after the launch of Aerie in India, we expect to have bigger stores.”

Aerie is the brand’s lingerie and intimate apparel line that will soon be launching in India. The brand’s main demographic is females aged between 15 and 25 years old. Aerie will also launch across India through the brand’s partnership with the Aditya Birla Group.

Stating that the brand has been “performing well” since entering the Indian market, the business aims to tackle the country’s Generation Z consumers. La Rosa sees a growth opportunity in the county’s young population and stated that the brand’s most popular product category in India for both men and women is denim.

The brand currently has three operational stores in the Delhi NCR and Chandigarh. The average store size is between 2,500 and 3,500 square feet, smaller than the average US store. The brand also retails online through its own e-commerce site and through the multi-brand platform Myntra.
