Amazon to shrink parts of its India operations as part of global restructuring

Amazon.com Inc. is streamlining its businesses across the world as part of a cost cutting campaign by the business’ chief executive officer Andy Jassy. Although Amazon plans to reduce a number of its Indian operations, this should result in minimal layoffs.

The main businesses that e-commerce giant Amazon plans to scale down are its meal deliveries business and its service which provides small businesses with bulk doorstep deliveries of packaged consumer goods, Livemint reported, citing an anonymous source close to the matter. This will enable Amazon to focus on its e-commerce business and other core components.
Amazon India has a large employee base in the country but the restructuring of operations should only result in several hundred layoffs out of thousands of workers, according to Livemint’s source. The business had invested heavily in its grocery delivery business in India but it did not take off in the same way it has in the US which has led Amazon to move away from the concept in India.
“We are discontinuing these programs in a phased manner to take care of current customers and partners,” wrote Amazon in a statement emailed to Mint. “We remain committed to India and will continue to invest across those areas where we can bring value to our customers.”
