“The target on board cannot be achieved without intensifying work in Uttar Pradesh,” said Amazon India’s director for last mile operations Karuna Shankar Pande about Amazon’s employment target, TNN reported. “Currently, 50 of the 1,850 Amazon-owned and partner delivery stations are in UP, providing work opportunities to thousands of delivery associates.”

Amazon India currently has fulfilment centres in Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow, Agra, and Gorakhpur. These facilities have a combined storage capacity of more than 3 million cubic feet to which is added a large-scale sorting centre in the state’s capital. The business also counts around 1 lakh sellers in the state ranging from small business owners to women entrepreneurs, and artisans among others.

The business plans to expand its logistics in the state and continue to onboard sellers. In addition to this, Amazon is expanding its ‘I Have Space’ programme to reach more rural locations in the state. The initiative, which began in 2015, enables local store owners to supplement their income by delivering Amazon goods to customers within a four kilometre radius of their store and has enabled Amazon thus far to penetrate rural areas of Uttar Pradesh including Barabanki and Hardoi among others.
