The investment was led by Singapore-based Amazon Corporate Holdings, with a token investment being made by the parent entity Amazon.com Inc, both of which were allotted a combined 915 million equity shares at a value of Rs 10 each, according to documents filed with the Registrar of Companies.

The investment is expected to further help Amazon in customer acquisition and seller onboarding to strengthen its presence in the Indian market.

This is Amazon’s first investment in its India marketplace unit. It had invested Rs 2,310 crore in Amazon Seller Services in June last year.

Amazon Seller Services had reported a loss of Rs 5,849 crore in the last financial year but despite the losses in the Indian market it continues to invest heavily as it sees huge growth potential in the country.

Amazon had recently announced that it will set up a $250 million venture fund - Amazon Smbhav Venture Fund - to back start-ups and entrepreneurs.
