E-commerce platform Amazon India announced on Friday that it will launch a storefront dedicated to over 450 women led small scale businesses and has partnered with UN Women for the initiative.

Amazon India's new dedicated storefront will shine the spotlight on women-owned businesses

As part of its focus on women-owned businesses, Amazon India will also make a contribution of Rs 25 ($0.34) for every transaction on the storefront to its NGO partner Nanhi Kali, which works to sponsor education for girls from underprivileged backgrounds. The storefront will house around 80,000 products and include specially produced bookmarks as free gifts with books purchased to spread women’s stories.

“It is no secret that the economic disruption caused by the pandemic has hit women-dominated sectors and small businesses the hardest, leaving women vulnerable to the loss of livelihoods,” said Amazon India’s senior vice president and country head Amit Agarwal at a recent virtual event, the Press Trust of India reported.

“Entrepreneurship amongst women can play a pivotal role in creating stronger economic outcomes for society.”

“At Amazon, we remain committed to support the success of women-led small and medium businesses,” said Agarwal.

“Technology and e-commerce have emerged as equalisers that can provide women a level-playing field, enabling them to build scalable businesses and create positive impact in society.”
