The global Amazon data breach that occurred on November 21 is likely to have affected Indian users of the site

Amazon reported that due to a technical error a large number of user email IDs were displayed on the e-commerce site on Wednesday, just as the US site’s major Black Friday sale was kicking off. As Amazon has around 150 million Indian customers registered on its website, industry experts believe that Indian customers were likely also affected, reports ET Bureau.

Amazon has not confirmed that Indian customers were affected but issued the following statement: “We have fixed the issue and informed customers who may have been impacted.”

Amazon users in Europe and the US have reported receiving alert emails telling them of the breach. Many have taken to Twitter to report receiving emails from Amazon about the matter.

If customer email IDs are displayed, this opens up the risk of phishing attacks and viruses/ malware. In order to combat any possible breach of security, Rajesh Maurya, the regional vice president for India and SAARC at Fortinet told ET Bureau: “Customers are advised to filter spam and install anti-virus software and to treat unsolicited emails with suspicion.”
