Amazon and Patni Group joint venture Appario Retail transfers inventory to new merchants

E-commerce giant Amazon India has begun delisting seller Appario Retail from its e-commerce platform. The joint venture between Amazon and Patni Group has faced increased regulatory scrutiny due to the government monitoring online sellers which receive investments from the marketplace on which they retail.

Amazon India is run by US business Amazon

“The transition has begun, and our brands are also being moved to sellers like Dawntech and Clicktech,” an anonymous source close to the matter told ET Tech. “Dawntech has become big on Amazon India.”

Amazon India delisted its top seller Cloudtail in 2022 to align the business’ practices with Indian regulations pertaining to foreign direct investment. Amazon was closely linked to Cloudtail and so it was deemed illegal for Amazon to continue its ties with the seller. The business also began to distance itself from Appario Retail around the same time.

Appario Retail’s inventory spans Amazon’s top product categories such as fashion and electronics. A number of Indian trade bodies, most prominently the Confederation of All India Traders, have protested against Amazon’s business practices in India, including its ties to some of its best performing sellers. Amazon India however has consistently stated that it operates in line with Indian regulations.
