E-commerce rivals Amazon India and Flipkart both began their largest sales of the year on October 3 and both reported a strong start with robust rural demand.

Amazon India and Flipkart launched their sales with a strong response on Sunday, according to the businesses - Archiv

“'Amazon Great Indian Festival 2021', our month-long festive celebrations has gotten off to a strong start, with millions of customers buying from small sellers listed on Amazon.in, including local shops, start-ups and brands, artisans, weavers and SMBs,” said Amazon India’s vice president Manish Tiwary in a statement, the Press Trust of India reported.

“During Prime Early Access on October 2, the number of local shops participating in the event more than doubled compared to last year.”

Amazon India launched its Amazon Great Indian Festival on Sunday and the online event will run for a month. The business also saw a 60% year-on-year increase in sellers who achieved their highest ever single-day sales totals on the first day of the sale.

Flipkart also launched its Big Billion Days sale on Sunday and saw around 45% of customer demand come from Tier 3 cities and beyond representing strong rural participation in the sale. The business also saw 40% growth in its ‘Flipkart Plus’ loyalty programme which enabled early access to the sale.

“This year, TBBD has started off seeing upbeat participation by customers and sellers,” said Flipkart’s vice president of customer growth Nandita Sinha, ET Bureau reported. “E-commerce is clearly gaining increasing acceptance among the masses, and it is evident that user-friendly technical and financial constructs are helping to drive its adoption.”

Both businesses had changed their sale start date to both begin on October 3 to avoid the other business stealing the spotlight. As the sales continue, tier 2 and 3 demand is expected to continue and the business with the strongest sales will begin to emerge. However, as Amazon India’s sale will last a lot longer than Flipkart’s, calculating the front runner will take considerable time.
