Foreign-owned e-commerce giants Amazon India and Flipkart both witnessed double digit year-on-year sales growth during Republic Day, thanks to stronger consumer sentiment during the third wave of the pandemic.

Numerous online and offline retailers launched sales and promotional events to celebrate India’s Republic Day on January 26 and sales across the board were generally higher than last year. Both Flipkart and Amazon saw their sales increase by around 40% year-on-year during the festivities, sources told the Economic Times.

Despite current retail restrictions in place in different states to curb the spread of the third wave of Covid-19, footfalls in brick-and-mortar stores in metros including New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata improved significantly over the past few days as the situation appears to be stabilising. This helped to boost Republic Day sales in-store and online shopping also increased thanks to an increasingly positive consumer sentiment.

Many online businesses ran Republic Day promotions for traditional and ethnic wear. Myntra promoted a range of ethnic wear on its Facebook page to celebrate the occasion and chose the same day to launch its ‘Month End Sale’.

Women’s ethnic wear retailer Biba also kicked off its end of season sale on the occasion and ran a ‘by Indians for Indians’ campaign on its social media platforms for Republic Day. Nykaa Fashion held a Republic Day online sale, accompanied by information on various textile traditions and where in India they originate from.
