Amazon Seller Services saw its losses decrease by 9.5% year-on-year to Rs 5,685 crore ($854.5 million) in the 2019 financial year compared to Rs 6,287.9 crore in the 2018 financial year, according to documents sourced by the business intelligence platform Tofler, accessed by the Press Trust of India. The business’ revenue rose by 55% year-on-year to Rs 7,778 crore during the same time period.

Although Amazon Seller Services was able to reduce its looses, Amazon’s wholesale arm Amazon Wholesale India saw losses widen to around Rs 141 crore in the 2019 financial year up from Rs 131.4 crore in the 2018 financial year, according to Tofler. The business’ payments arm Amazon Pay India also reported increased losses in the 2019 financial year.

Amazon entered the Indian market in 2012. The business’ founder Jeff Bezos announced in 2016 that the business will invest $5 billion in its Indian operations and the business’ main competitor in the Indian online retail market is Flipkart. Both businesses are currently under scrutiny from the Confederation of All India Traders which has criticised their interpretation of the government’s foreign direct investment regulations.
