Three anonymous sources told Mint that Amazon plans to expand its “scan and pay” payments service across India’s neighbourhood stores, embracing the unorganised sector of the market. The business first rolled out the service in Shoppers Stop clothing stores in which Amazon has a five percent stake. Next on the list is the grocery chain More which retails personal care, food, and lifestyle products.

“Since it [Amazon] has a stake in these two chains, it is starting offline payments with these stores," said one of the anonymous sources. “Subsequently, it will start reaching out to merchants, which would take more time as it is in the unorganized sector."

“We have begun introducing Amazon smile code, a new way for our customers to shop and pay at physical stores like Shoppers Stop, among others," a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed in a statement. “Customers will soon find Amazon smile codes in neighbourhood retail stores, where they can scan and pay for their purchases seamlessly."

Amazon India will use its payments service to bring more users online and foster a sense of loyalty. As around 90 percent of India’s transactions take place offline, tapping into them presents a large business opportunity.
