UPI, a payment system created by the National Payments Corporation of India for processing transactions between banks, has now launched on Amazon India for Android users. The service will promote secure payments and financial transactions on the e-commerce platform through Amazon’s partnership with Axis Bank.

Users of the service will be able to use their new Amazon Pay UPI ID to pay for purchases made on Amazon India as well as for recharge and bill payment transactions, without having to enter their bank details. This both speeds up purchasing online and increases security, the business told IANS in a statement. Transactions are secured through mobile device verification and a UPI PIN number. Customers have to link their bank accounts to the service to set up and are able to use the service without giving the details again.

"The launch of Amazon Pay UPI is a key milestone to help accelerate adoption of merchant payments on UPI platforms," Vikas Bansal, the director of Amazon Pay, India, told IANS.

The step towards increasing digital payments is in line with the government’s initiative of creating a “Cashless India”. The Amazon Pay service was launched in the US in 2007.
