Amazon India marketplace sees revenue grow 49% in FY21

Amazon India marketplace’s owner Amazon Seller Services saw its operational revenue increase by 49% year-on-year in the 2021 financial year with losses reduced by over Rs 1,000 crore ($150.3 million).

Amazon Seller Services’ revenue increased from Rs 10,847.6 crore in the 2020 financial year to Rs 16,200 crore in the 2021 financial year, according to data sourced by business intelligence platform Tofler, accessed by ET Tech. The business also managed to trim losses from Rs 5,849 crore in the 2020 financial year to Rs 4,748 crore in the 2021 financial year. 
 
Another of Amazon’s businesses operating in India, Amazon Wholesale, significantly scaled down its business in the country in the past few years in response to tighter government foreign direct investment regulations. Amazon Wholesale (India) saw its operational revenue drop by 70% in the 2020 financial year, but only drop by 7% in the 2021 financial year showing a stabilisation. Moreover, Amazon Wholesale reported a profit of Rs 46 crore in the 2021 financial year compared to a loss of Rs 132 crore in the 2020 financial year.  

Offering marketplace services has significantly contributed to Amazon’s growth in India. Amazon India reported revenue of Rs 7,555 crore from offering marketplace services in the 2021 financial year compared to revenue of Rs 4,949 crore in the 2020 financial year.
