Last year Amazon had elevated the India country manager Amit Agarwal to the role of Senior Vice President, making him a part of the company’s global team.

Now amidst reports of layoffs the company has promoted Rao to the position of VP in the month of March. Rao now is part of the senior management team vice-presidents at Amazon India that includes Manish Tiwary, vice-president, category management; Akhil Saxena, vice-president, customer fulfillment; and Sriraman Jagannathan, who looks at financial services.

“There is no change of role — he continues to lead the finance function for Amazon India,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Economic Times.

Rao had joined Amazon in 2014. Before that, he had largely worked at Unilever for about two decades. He has been the chief financial officer for the online ecommerce business at Amazon India, which has been in an intense competition with Flipkart in India.

Amazon India laid off a small section of its workforce, totalling 60 employees, last week and more are expected follow as part of a global restructuring programme.
