As small businesses bear the brunt of the economic effects of the extended nationwide lockdown, Amazon India has decided to reduce the commission it takes from small sellers in a bid to help them stay afloat, TNN reported. Although many states such as Odisha and Maharashtra have re-started e-commerce deliveries for all products including ‘non-essentials’, the muted consumer sentiment will continue to effect sellers during the extended lockdown.

“Tens of thousands of small sellers would benefit from the 50% fee waiver,” said Amazon India’s head of seller services Gopal Pillai, TNN reported. “It’s going to take some time for our merchants to get back to normal, so we are making it valid till the end of June as they come back online.”

The business has also waived storage fees and referral and fulfilment fees for sellers and has relaxed its regulations on claims and reimbursements timelines. Many sellers of non-essential goods are facing inventory pile-ups which will especially effect sectors offerings seasonal products such as fashion brands.

Amazon India will also give sellers an additional incentive bonus of Rs 35 per unit of essential items they sell through Amazon’s fulfilment service including on products such as masks and hand sanitiser. This incentive is designed to increase the availability of much-needed sanitation goods across India.
