The GJC’s new chairman Ashish Pethe has been involved in the Indian jewellery industry for a quarter-of-a-century and his most recent role was as the GJC’s Western region zonal chairman, a role he will continue in as he assumes his new chairmanship. Pethe had also led the GJC National Jewellery Awards in 2020.

“In sync with government’s policies, my first effort will be to transform and energise jewellers across India to bring more synergies within the indigenous industry,” said Pethe, about his appointment, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council shared on its website.

“We shall strive to unite the entire industry and work towards achieving GJC's set goal of ‘One Industry One Voice’.”

Pethe shared that some of the first issues he intends to tackle include Hallmarking, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and the banking sector's hesitancy to provide loans to the gem and jewellery sector among others.

“There is a need for the industry to become more organised and compliant,” said Mehra upon his appointment as vice chairman.

“GJC will continue to create better and newer platforms for the industry.”
