Up-and-coming Bengali designer Ghosh’s new online collection launch mixes traditional aesthetics and craft techniques with subversive details. The multi-media launch also celebrates the centenary of director, Satyajit Ray.

The collection and accompanying photo and video campaign is based on the film Devi by Satyajit Ray.

“The film Devi talks about religious dogmatism, superstition, pain, sorrow, conflict within a woman, and the conflict and the pain inspired me to create a collection,” Ghosh told the Telegraph India about the collection. “It was more like a narrative and I didn’t want to just take the poster of Devi and print it on the sari. We took screenshots of some scenes from the film and turned them into embroidery.”

The collection has a colour palette of classic red, black, and hints of beige. The story of Devi is told through the mixed media embroidery on both the womenswear and the menswear and traditional designs are reimagined for a modern audience through these innovative details.

A notable piece is a 17th-century, bishop-sleeve blouse which has a cut-out at the back which uses, “crystals and aari technique on a silk net to mimic a skin that has been peeled off, for the word Devi to be written on it,” with, “blood oozing out,” said Ghosh.

Agnik Ghosh launched Agnik Kolkata after graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology. The brand retails its collections through its Instagram account and is currently online only, according to its Facebook page.
