Inspired by the rich history of its native Varanasi, traditional wear brand Abhishek Gupta Benares’ latest collection celebrated traditional craftsmanship and aesthetics. However, far from being overly nostalgic, the collection’s sleek, form-fitting tailoring gave it a thoroughly modern feel.

The brand’s collection was presented with a fashion film which began with a troupe of models sailing across a serene lagoon. The models then wandered through a barren yet hauntingly beautiful desert before arriving at a regal palace with blazing torches and a dark yet inviting atmosphere. The film was shot at Guleria Kothi in Varanasi and was directed by Santosh Mishra, the brand announced on Facebook.

Notable items in the collection included a metallic, brocade mini-dress paired with skin-tight leggings and long, slim-fit sherwanis in aubergine and metallic weaves. Lehengas and gowns featured sheer panels and textured embellishments of vibrant gardens and birds.

Models were adorned with fine jewellery by Amethyst by Rahul Popli including statement earrings dripping with gems. Hair and makeup was kept classic with a deep smoky eye and up-do for the women and turban and khol eyeliner for the men.

This edition of FDCI x LFW is its second joint venture and its phygital format mixes fashion films with live broadcast runway shows. The fashion week runs from October 5 to 10 and counts Rise Worlswide, Nexa, and Ajio, amongst its sponsors.
