Bangladesh will have to improve the methods of using resources in the textile sector if it intends to reach the target of $50 billion in the readymade garments (RMG) exports.

Speakers at a workshop on ‘Reducing Water & Recovering Heat’ highlighted the importance of improving the production efficiency of textile sector using sustainable methods.

The workshop that was held in Dhaka, was jointly organised by Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PaCT) program of International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank Group, and the Textile Technology Business center (TTBC).

Bangladeshi textile industry can only be sustained by investing in water and energy efficiency improvement in factories and nearby communities, say experts

“With the rising cost of energy and water uses, the growth trajectory of Bangladesh textile industry can only be sustained by investing in water and energy efficiency improvement in factories and nearby communities,” said PaCT deputy programme manager Nishat Shahid Chowdhury.

“IFC Bangladesh is committed to the development goals of the industry and will extend support through capacity and business development through the PaCT programme,” he added.

“I would like to stress on the strong partnership we have developed over the years with IFC in working on green initiative,” said BGMEA president M Siddiqur Rahman.

He further said, “IFC’s customised and tailor-made support for the Bangladesh textile sector, complemented with their global knowledge and expertise has helped us to drive forward the cleaner production initiatives across the textile sector in Bangladesh.”
