50 jobs were understood to be axed at the retailer’s head office in the UK on Tuesday, and the company has confirmed the number will rise to about 170 across its global operations. People affected will receive a full package of support and assistance in finding new employment, said the brand.

“Whilst Clarks remains a global leader in the footwear market, we have, in recent years, experienced a highly demanding commercial and economic environment, with increasing competition and intensified customer expectations”, said a spokesperson.

“Clarks has begun restructuring the company to focus on its global distribution channels, combining its product and marketing functions and making best use of its talented product development teams in Street, Somerset and Boston, Massachusetts”.

Additionally, a ‘significant’ number of employees have been asked to take on new roles and responsibilities to support company’s growth.

Clarks is a British footwear retailer and manufacturer, and has more than a thousand stores worldwide.
