Dior and Raf Simons: The end of an era

To the fashion world’s general surprise : Raf Simons, artistic director of Christian Dior’s women’s haute couture , ready-to-wear and accessories collections is leaving the label after three years of service. The designer arrived at Dior in 2012, with the difficult task of replacing John Galliano and bringing in a new image to the iconic luxury house and property of the LVMH group. For the designer coming from the famous “Belgian school” of fashion, designing haute couture was a first. His collections for Dior were a perfect combination of his preferred minimalist and refined style, his artistic and historical inspirations and the legendary codes of house Dior. Every collection included veiled or even suggestive references to the founding designer, Monsieur Dior himself.Like the profusion of nature, flowers and gardens present in every season, Dior’s Bar jacket revisited to infinity, and the rigor of his pieces mixed with soft romantic flair. Since his first collections in 2012 to his last ready-to-wear collection for spring/summer 2016 presented October 2 in Paris, Raf Simons, now 47 years old, was able to instill a breath of fresh air with creative force and modernism to Dior all while adding his own personal signature. The designer leaves big shoes to fill behind him and although no successor has yet been named, a number of rumors have sprouted around the fashion world suggesting designer names from the LVMH group like Riccardo Tisci and Jonathan Anderson to savvy creators like Proenza Schouler and Christopher Kane… Dior’s new designer will undoubtedly be announced in the following days and the next rendez-vous will be in January for the presentation of the new haute couture collection.
