The West Bengal directorate of textiles recently decided to set up a mega carpet cluster at Malgaon village in Kaliaganj block of West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district where weavers have been stitching Banarasi-style carpets since the 1980s with little recognition.

Work will start after the government approves the nearly-complete detailed project report.

About 300 women weave carpets in that village at present under the Malgaon Handloom Cluster Development Society, formed in 2009.

Besides weaving woolen carpets, the facility will have arrangements for training, marketing and carpet designing, district industries centre general manager Sunil Sarkar told a news agency.

Around 40 carpets of various sizes are made in Malgaon every month, said society's president Siddique Hossain. The district industries centre makes arrangements to send these carpets to various handicraft fairs.
