Walmart opens fulfillment centre in Maharashtra, to expand store count in 2 years

WalMart India Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart Stores Inc has opened its first fulfillment centre (FC) to give a boost to its stores and online retail services in the state. The company has also said that it will continue expanding its cash & carry stores aggressively in the coming years.

The 45,000 square feet FC is located in the outskirts of Mumbai at Bhiwandi and will cater to kirana stores along with other B2B businesses housing packaged consumer products & home supplies which will help fulfill store and online orders.
 
“The FC will contribute to the State and local economy by creating over 1500 direct & indirect local jobs, developing SME suppliers, enhancing women’s economic empowerment and empowering local communities,” Krish Iyer, CEO at Walmart India said in a statement.

“Besides, we work closely with our partners to enhance our mutual operating environments and with this initiative we are taking another definitive step towards building India’s most impactful distribution eco-system,” Iyer added.
 
Walmart India had recently signed the MoU with the Government of Maharashtra to build 15 Cash & Carry stores with an investment of Rs 900 crore under the brand of Best Price in the state of Maharashtra. There are already two Cash & Carry stores in the State in Aurangabad and Amravati.
 
“We will open 5-7 stores next year and add another 8-10 in the subsequent year,” said Iyer.
 
Walmart India owns and operates 21 Best Price Modern Wholesale stores in 9 States across India and has integrated omni-channel in all stores.
