An Oak Tasar Development Project backed by the Central Silk Board was launched by Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra S Rawat in Dehradun recently. Announcing a state grant of ₹1 crore for the supply of silkworms to farmers, Rawat said land will be provided for setting up an Oak Research Centre. Oak gets naturally produced in excessive quantity in the state.
This ambitious project will increase silk production in the state, union minister of state for textiles Ajay Tamta said. The production of mulberry silk in Uttarakhand is now 33 metric tonnes and the target is to make it 55 metric tonnes, he said.
Uttarakhand’s weather is ideal for Manipuri oak. Uttarakhand can take advantage of the current situation as silk production has decreased in plains, according to Indian media reports.
For rejuvenating the Kosi river, oak will be planted on 500 hectare forest land in the state.
