Traditional and tribal artists will now be able to sell their handmade products such as clothing and jewellery online internationally through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India’s (TRIFED’s) new initiative. Following the memorandum of understanding signed by TRIFED and e-commerce companies Amazon, Snapdeal, Flipkart, and Gem, around 5,000 products will be made available online in India and overseas through TRIFED’s brand Tribe India.

Pravir Krishna, the Managing Director of TRIFED at the Ministry of Tribal Affaris explained their plans and said: “From January 1, we will aggressively promote these items and it will be made available on e-retailers so that these products will be made available for customers in other countries.”

Along with making their handmade products internationally available, Tribe India also aim to vastly increase their revenue. The plan is to bring their yearly revenue total from between 20 and 25 crore rupees (approximately three to 3.7 million dollars) to 100 crore rupees (approximately 15 million dollars). Krishna stated that this would in turn “increase earnings of the tribal population” and benefit them greatly.

Tribe India currently has 55,000 tribal craftspeople working with them and products are available at 110 outlets across India. The brand is also currently promoting Minor Forest Produce (MFP) sale and engaging in a number of value adding initiatives.
