In July last year, Shopclues launched its own brand for homewares, Home Berry, followed by launching a womenswear lable, Meia, later in September. Shopclues has also launched a men’s footwear private label Baton and the electronics accessories brand Digimate.

“In 2017, we launched four exclusive labels… Despite being at a nascent stage and in a short span of time, we have seen our exclusive labels grow significantly and contributing about ten percent to the orders,” said Ritika Taneja, the Senior Director of ShopClues.

Taneja has stated that the growth rate of Shopclues’ private labels is currently between ten and 15 percent but its lifestyle category (that includes fashion) is growing faster at between 22 and 25 percent. As private labels offer higher profit margins and allow for easier inventory control, it is no wonder the e-commerce site is heralding the growth. The platform is indeed aiming to expand private label categories and Taneja said: “Currently, we have over 3,500 products across our exclusive labels, the maximum being in lifestyle (Meia and Baton combined). We aim to further increase the width and depth of our collection.”

Although Taneja stated that the business predicts private labels to account for 12 percent of the total revenue for this financial year (2017/2018), no specific numbers or targets have been released.

Shopclues’ total revenue grew by 11.7 percent to 180.3 crore rupees (approximately 27 million US dollars) in the financial year 2016/2017 from 161.4 crore rupees (approximately 24.2 million dollars) the year before. The company also narrowed its losses to 332.65 crore rupees (approximately 50 million dollars) for the financial year that ended in March, 2017.
