Rajka Designs used to be an export only operation but has started to integrate itself into the domestic market and this market will now be the focus of its future expansion. The business has experienced between 40 and 50 percent growth each year and, with the current renaissance of traditional Indian weaves in the fashion industry, it makes sense that Rajka is tapping into this.

The company’s director, Samvit Sarabhai, said: “We are already working with artisans based in Kutch, Ahmedabad and Southern Rajasthan. Now we are going to identify more traditional techniques like Ikat and will work closely with the weavers of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. We see this segment as one with great potential and it will give us more design options. We are also going to double our stitching capacity. The expansion may take some time but as we are growing, we have to increase the production.”

Rajka has a current capacity of manufacturing 5,000 clothing items and 1,000 quilts each month but this is expected to rise dramatically this fiscal year.

It was founded by Rajshree Sarabhai Kartikeya Sarabhai. The business focuses on sustainability and has been running since 1982. Handmade fabrics and embroidery techniques are the mainstay of the brand.
