With leading e-commerce players like Myntra entering the online beauty market, beauty portal Purplle has decided to go offline to cash in on the lucrative beauty sector in the country.

the online beauty and makeup retailer is planning to experiment with brick & mortar stores and will open 5 stores in Mumbai this financial year, a senior executive said. The company will also expand its offline model to other cities after evaluating the response to the stores in Mumbai.

"We are looking to open five offline stores in Mumbai this year with an investment of about Rs 15 lakh per store," Manish Taneja, co-founder of Purplle was quoted by a news agency. "We are also looking at opening kiosks in malls and other areas where we are unable to get a proper location," he added.

Fashion etailer Myntra recently moved into the online beauty segment and many other e-commerce firms are eyeing big revenune from the beauty segment which is forcing online beauty firms to experiment with the omnichannel model.

Beauty platform Nykaa was the first to go down the omnichannel route with stores across India and has plans to open 30 offline stores by 2020.

The beauty and personal care (BPC) market in India is expected to touch $10 billion by 2021 growing at an annual rate of 5-6 per cent, according to a report by Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association (IBHA).

Taneja further said that the company is currently not in need of funds and will look to raise funds next year to scale up its business operations.

Purplle products across 650 brands, 50,000 SKUs, and 300 beauty specific sellers and clocked approximately Rs 300 crore in gross sales in the last fiscal year and expects to break even by December this year.
