Pashmina wool processing plant delayed in Nepal

In spite of the Nepal government allocating Np Rs 6 million, the setting up of a pashmina wool processing plant has got delayed and may not be completed in the current fiscal year. Pashmina entrepreneurs have suggested construction of the processing plant in northern Nepal’s Mustang district, the main pashmina producing region in the country.

However, the Trade and Export Promotion Center (TEPC) is keen on setting up three pashmina wool processing plants in Dolpa and Manang, besides Mustang, reports said quoting Nepal Pashmina Industries Association (NPIA) president Durga Bikram Thapa.
 
At present, the pashmina produced in Nepal’s mountainous regions are sent to China for refining in the absence of such a plant in Nepal. So, establishing a plant would help domestic pashmina entrepreneurs to make finished goods in Nepal itself, according to Chyangra farmers.

Meanwhile, Chyangra Pashmina, the collective trademark of Nepali pashmina products, has been approved by a total of 47 countries.

The Chyangra Pashmina logo, okayed for use on Nepali pashmina products in 2011, guarantees that strict quality standards and environmentally friendly methods have been followed, and that no child labour has been used, during the entire production process.
 
Following the approval of Chyangra trademark, exports of Nepali pashmina products have increased from Rs 1.63 billion in 2010-11 to Rs 2.44 billion in 2016-17, as per TEPC data.
