FRANKFURT, Jan 12, 2010 (AFP) - Beiersdorf, the German maker of Nivea face cream, posted on Tuesday 12 January a provisional 2009 net profit of 379 million euros (550 million dollars), a drop of 33 percent from the previous year.

The firm's 2008 net profits were boosted by asset sales however.

Sales across the group fell by 3.7 percent to 5.75 billion euros.

The firm's cosmetics division was relatively resilient, recording sales of around five billion, a 2.2 percent fall from 2008.

But sales at Beiersdorf's adhesives business, much more dependent on the economic climate, were down 12.8 percent on the previous year, to 737 million euros.
