The expansion forms part of a joint venture between the company’s owner Ryohin Keikaku and Reliance Brands Limited, created for this purpose at the end of last year.

With the openings, Muji will become the first Japanese retailer to launch stores in India, marking the second landmark the retailer achieves in the country after being the first-ever Japanese retailer to receive individual approval for Foreign Direct Investment.

The brand dedicated to apparel, household and food products will begin its Indian operations with a store at the Palladium shopping centre in Mumbai, due to launch in August. The Palladium is home to a number of high-end luxury retail brands, restaurants and a food court, and its surrounding area supports the location as a leading shopping hub.

The second Muji store will be opened in September in the VR Mall next to Phoenix Market City in Bangalore, India’s third-largest city.
