Mammut is about to open in New York. But the Swiss brand is not looking for retail premises on Fifth Avenue or in SoHo.

Instead, it has opted for opening in one of Brooklyn's residential neighbourhoods. Mammut will in fact establish a retail outlet in a large climbing and fitness gym, which will open inside an old warehouse at 321 Starr Street.

For this project, the Swiss brand has worked in connection with US group Metro Rock Climbing Centers, specialised in the installation of this kind of venues. For an Alpine activities specialist like Mammut, this is an attractive opportunity for engaging directly with sport practitioners living in the city.

"Given the proliferation of fitness gyms, and the fact that an increasing number of urbanites is practising outdoor activities, Mammut's partnership with MetroRock denotes the importance of such growing market segments," underlined Bill Supple, CEO of Mammut North America.

The partners also remarked in their press release that, according to the Outdoor Industry Association, currently 34% of US outdoor goods consumers are living in cities.

Mammut claimed a revenue of CHF246.9 million (€225.7 mn), 50% of which was generated by the sale of equipment. A 70% share of its business is directed to international markets, and the company operates subsidiaries in Germany, Norway, China, Japan, South Korea and the USA.
