The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) are holding talks with e-commerce major Amazon India to sell its products online on their marketplace to boost sales.

KVIC is witnessing a steep rise in sales and clocked Rs 2503 crore (approx $374 million) during the last financial year, which was a 25 percent jump from Rs 2,007 crore it posted in the previous fiscal.

The commission expects its tie up with Amazon to further boost its sales further in the current fiscal due to its strong pan India presence.

Amazon India has earlier signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh’s Khadi and Village Industries Board to facilitate selling clothing and other products made from the traditional and sustainable Khadi textile on their e-commerce site.

Now, Amazon is looking to extend this partnership across India and looking to sell Khadi exclusively on its platform, Times of India reported citing anonymous official and sources.

“We have held preliminary talks with Amazon and the arrangement should be worked out shortly,” a KVIC official told TOI, who did not wish to be identified. The government agency is, however, not looking at immediate tie-ups with Flipkart or other marketplaces, sources said.

The Indian Government has long been championing Khadi as part of their “Make in India” campaign, making the textile GST exempt and tying up with a variety of businesses to increase its distribution.

The partnership with Amazon is expected to be in line with the “Digital India” initiative that aims to make more Indian made products available online.
