The Globus Fashion chain, launched in 1998, has just launched “Khadi Corners” in their Chennai and Noida stores with their Ahmadabad and Varanasi stores scheduled to be next for the gradual roll out of this initiative. The “Khadi Corner” initiative, whereby all Globus stores will be fitted with a section dedicated to apparel made from the sustainable and traditional Khadi textile, was created following a MoU with KVIC.

Globus’ tie up with KVIC aims to have a triple benefit in the form of increased sales for Globus, employment generation for weavers, and wage increases for artisans. The Chairman of KVIC, Vinai Kumar Saxena, said about the partnership: “This is a good platform where customers will get khadi without travelling much of a distance.” The idea is to make the sustainable textile more accessible, especially to younger customers who do not know much about it.

Amit Kumar, the CEO of Globus Stores Private Ltd. said: “Fruits of a good collaboration are always sweet and Globus store has more of generation Z buyers who will get exposure to unique khadi apparels of different flavours along with other village industry products like essential oil, soaps in their store. The first store opened at New Delhi has marked very encouraging sales of Rs 1,800 per sq. feet which has proved as best so far.”

Since the Government of India has championed the Khadi textile through their “Make in India” campaign and given it GST exemption, many designers are using the fabric for both ethnic and western wear. Globus’ MoU with KVIC will take this trend to the high-street and contribute to widening the appeal of Khadi textiles.
