On Wednesday, Instagram announced it passed the one billion active user mark, proof of the huge popularity of this social network for sharing pictures and video, especially with young people.

The announcement was made by Kevin Systrom, boss of the Facebook-owned social network, as he presented a new Instagram functionality to industry professionals: the possibility of posting one-hour-long videos.

“We now have a community of one billion users,” declared Kevin Systrom. Only last September, Instagram claimed to have 800 million users.

Instagram therefore joins the billion-user club of Facebook-owned social media, besides Facebook itself with two billion users, WhatsApp and Messenger.

Instagram has become a genuine social phenomenon, overtaking rivals Twitter and Snapchat. It is very successful with the younger generation, which is currently shying away from Facebook.

Instagram was launched in 2010, and it was bought by Facebook in 2012 for approximately $1 billion.

According to eMarketer, this year Instagram will generate an advertising revenue of nearly $5.5 billion, equivalent to a 70% increase compared to last year.
