The Embassy of India, Nepal, hosted the Khadi Fashion Event as a celebration of Indian and Nepali fashion and textiles and both Indian and Nepali designers participated in a runway show and market.

The Khadi Fashion Event was a celebration of Indian and Nepali fashion and textiles - Khadi Fashion Event

On Friday November 10, the Indian Embassy in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, put on an evening of runway shows and pop-up shops to celebrate Khadi fabric in both Indian and Nepali design. The Ambassador of India to Nepal, Manjeev Singh Puri, was a guest of honour at the event and said: “We are delighted to attend this event as khadi has become a household name worldwide and people… are finding new ways of bringing this tradition to the world in many ways.”

Other special guests at the event included Dr Shashanka Koirala, the Secretary General of the South Asia Foundation, Rahul Baruwa, the Project Director at the South Asia Foundation, and Urusha Shrestha, among others. Some of the Nepali and Indian designers who showcased their work at the event included Sabah Nepal, Kallista, Payal Jain, and Sumnima Bastola.

The runway shows ran in tandem with the India-Nepal Folk Craft Festival which was organised by the Embassy of India and the South Asia Foundation and supported by the Indian Government’s Ministry of Textiles. The festival, took place over five days from November 7 to 11 at Bhrikuti Mandap, one of the capitals largest venues. The festival featured an array of designer pop-up shops with 50 artisans and craftsmen from India and 30 from Nepal. These two events saw the Nepali and Indian Governments coming together to celebrate traditional textiles which are becoming increasingly popular in India itself and now, it seems, in Nepal.
