Ikea to hire 15,000 people for India operations

Swedish home furnishing retailer Ikea, which enters the Indian market in 2018, is planning to take its employee network to 15,000 from the current 400-odd employees by 2025.

Ikea recently opened its first experiential centre 'Ikea Hej (Hello in Swedish) Home' in Hyderabad where it is expected to open its first India store early next year.

The company is expected to open three flagship stores in India next year in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru. It has set a target of 25 stores by 2025 for the Indian market and will be employing around 500 to 700 workers for each of its store.

 “Ikea currently has close to 400 co-workers in India and plans to have 15,000 co-workers by 2025, of which 50 per cent will be women. The company is hiring 500-700 co-workers for each of its four stores that will open in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi/NCR cities,” said said Ikea India Country HR Manager Anna Carin Mansson in a statement.

The company is expected to employ over 2,000 workers early next year as it will need extra hands to support its Hej Home experience centres which it plans to take to other cities.

Ikea Group which reported an operating profit of 3.0 billion euros ($3.6 billion) for its fiscal year also plans to reward its employees under the Tack programme by offering incentives of Rs 1.5 lac ($2500) to each worker in the firm.

“Ikea Group in India will give an additional Rs 1.50 lakh each to our co- workers’ pensions this year under the Tack (Thank You) programme,” added Mansson.
