Hyderabad celebrates handloom

The IT Handloom Mela in Hyderabad is taking place from April 25 to 27 with the aim of promoting sustainable, handloom textiles with members of the fashion and IT industries.

The three day Handloom Mela eventis taking place at Hyderabad’s DLF Building and is expected to have attracted 35,000 employees in the IT sector over its running period. The fashion event brings together the IT and handloom sector, two very different industries. The aim is to promote links between the two sectors and promote handloom in Hyderabad.

The event featured a fashion show with clothing made from sustainable textiles such as Pochampally, Ikat, Gadwal, Siddipet, Ikkat Pattu Sarees, and handloom Kurthas among others. Twenty professional models were joined by 15 IT professionals on the runway on April 25, all wearing handloom.

Stalls also sell handloom clothing and sales of 20 lakh are expected over the course of the three days, according to the organisers. Satyanarayana Mathala, president of the Facility Management Council (FMC), said about the event: “Handlooms are eco-friendly and are naturally made. We would also like to give a clarion call to all managements of various schools in Hyderabad to implement handloom uniforms in schools from the coming year.”

Designers involved in the event include Konda Kavitha Reddy who consistently uses handloom textiles. Attendees have so far included Srinivas Rao, the Deputy CRO, in the government of Telangana, Satyanarayana Mathala, the President of the Facilities Management Council (FMC) of Telangana, and Venkat Ramana, Vice-Chairman of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education.
